I, like millions of other people across the United States and around the world, am affected by arthritis. I am affected by it not because I have it (I believe it's creeping in), but because my wife Audrey has it. That is why I walk - to find a cure someday so that she can wake up pain-free and live a pain-free life! What a day that will be!

The sad part is that Audrey doesn’t know what it is like to NOT be in pain. It’s constant. When I think about an ache or pain that I feel for a couple hours or maybe a couple of days and how much I complain about hurting, I have to remind myself that she lives with that kind of pain every day. The funny thing is that I never really hear her complain a whole lot about it. She rarely talks about it to friends or family. Looking at her, you wouldn’t know it and she’s very good at covering that fact up. But if you really look at her, you can see it in her eyes. She hurts and there’s nothing I can do for her and that’s what hurts me the most.

Year after year we have participated in the Duluth Arthritis Walk - one of our favorite places in the world - to raise funds and awareness for arthritis research and the programs and services the Arthritis Foundation North Central Chapter provides to people affected by one or more of the many forms of arthritis. We want to continue to spread awareness that arthritis is not just an old people’s disease – kids, young adults, baby boomers, gen xers – they are all affected by arthritis. It’s not just minor aches and pains either – the media would have you believe that a couple of pills can take care of those aches and pains and have you dancing the night away – not true!

I walk for Audrey, my hero, who never gives up, and will never give in to this devastating disease! She took control a long time ago with help from the Arthritis Foundation and she will never give up the fight!
